So, I have just hit my first deadline at uni with the module Visual Language which consisted of drawing, drawing and more drawing. Each week we had to complete an A1 study on various themes and also complete a sketch book throughout. We started with foliage and flowers…
We then moved on to learn how to use Photoshop as a drawing tool. Our first task was to complete a study of foliage. It was the most time consuming thing ever and it almost drove me to insanity! We then went on to learn to ‘trace’ on Photoshop and complete a study of the lovely church square in Hartlepool…
Then in the freezing cold we took a trip down to Hartlepool marina where we sat and worked in our sketchbooks, collected research and became inspired…
The week after, we were told to collect items that we believed were interesting with design potential. In the morning we were shocked to find out we had to create a drawing set using minimal items, scraps of fabric and odd bits and bobs. We then had to go on to produce an A1 study of the drawing set… We then went on to learn about alternative drawing techniques to help us explore drawing in new and quick ways. We used monoprint, screen wash and carbon paper. I also had a play around with black dye and bleach. I applied black dye to the background and allowed it to dry. I then used a large brush with bleach really dry and layered it up. I love the scratchy effect it gave and due to layering the bleach up it left lots of different shades on cream and brown…
We then went on a trip to Bowes Museum to collect images and work in our sketchbooks. It was full of the most gorgeous decorative…things. There is no one word to sum up everything in the museum. There was gorgeous porcelain, rich furniture, amazing paintings, interesting drawings, divine fashion and textiles…
For the final task of our module we were eventually given a little bit of freedom and got to choose our own theme to then produce an A1 sheet on it. Due to my dad enjoying modelling, I chose my theme to be tools. I stole loads of his old, rusty, vintage looking tools. Who knew rusty tools could be so exciting?
